SPARCs, SGIs and VAXen, oh my ...

To be completely frank, I am not much of a hardware person; I prefer dealing with software. One of the reasons may be that you can break hardware, but you can't break software, and I am usually not too careful with my stuff. (I'm not clumsy as such (as you can see here), I simply expect my tools to withstand the occasional prod or scratch.)

I'm also more interested in quality hardware than in fast hardware. Mix that with a want to have something out of the ordinary, and you have the perfect used-workstations lover.

Before moving to Bonn, I sold or gave away the majority of my computers, and the remaining boxes are slowing gathering dust through disuse. When you're working on Sun E10000 and V15000 systems, SGI Origin 3000 and the like as part of your everyday job, you come to the point where you don't want to have these things around in your free time.

At the moment, I own the following computers, arranged according to their `interesting-ness'. They are named after characters from the universe of the French comic artist Jean Giraud, aka. Moebius.

deepo
SPARCstation Voyager (SUNW,S240)
py
AMD K6

I recently (8/2004) gave the following computers to Waldemar Brodkorb and Andreas Neth of LUUSA; I hope they will put them to better use than I have in the last two years (which is, none at all.)

leonide/kill
VAXstation 4000 model 90
soluna
SPARCstation Voyager (SUNW,S240)
patmah
SGI Indy (IP22)
incal
IBM RS/6000 model 250
burg
SPARCclassic (4/15)
atana
SPARCstation IPX (4/50)

At one point, I also owned the following computers:

amok
SGI Power Challenge M (IP26) (sold)
animah
Hamstation (sold)
orphidite
SPARCserver 670MP (sold)
meta-baron
SPARCstation 2 (sold)
gorgo
Sun 3/50 (sold)
moebius
Intel Celeron SMP (sold, replaced by an Athlon 1200)
difool
Acernote Nuovo (broken)

I still have a MicroVAX-II (just the bare CPU and memory boards), and a PDP11/73 in a BA23 enclosure. I think I will hold on to them for their nostalgic value.
